So, lately I’ve seen a lot of people engaging in calisthenics. It has drawn my interest and I’m looking into mixing this into my current training. It’s really useful for days when I’m not able to get to the gym but still want a workout. So I decided I would make a post about what calisthenics is exactly and how to get started with it!
What is it?
Calistenics is a purely bodyweight form of training that helps you get stronger and do awesome things like a ‘human flag’. This sport can help you build an stronger and leaner body without ever having to go to the gym.
Calisthenics starts from a couple of basic movements. These movements are:
- Push ups
- Core exercises
All these basics can be done in every variation possible. Most beginners aren’t able to do a normal pull-up for instance. There are a lot of ways the pull-up can be modified to help you learn it. You can add a resistance band or do negative pull-ups (where you jump to get on top of the bar and then slowly lower yourself).
What do I need?
Nothing! No expensive gym membership, no special equipment. You can learn the basics in the warmth of your own home. “But, I can’t do pull-ups at home, don’t I need some kind of bar” you say? Well, there are variations to gain some upper body strength that don’t require a bar. You can always check out the nearby playground for some bars to train with.
When you progress it could be you might want to get yourself some equipment, like push-up bars, a dip station, pull-up bar and an ab wheel. But this is not necessary if you have a playground or fit-o-meter in the neighborhood.
Some useful video’s
Of course, now you guys still don’t really know how to start with calisthenics and what sort of training you need to do to progress. So I looked some video’s up to help you get an idea of a training.
